“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.” Joseph Pilates
Pilates is a great form of exercise to improve core stability and strength (important in protecting the spine), as well correct muscle imbalances, improve posture, flexibility and balance. By focusing the mind with the muscular system, it can allow better ways to manage the daily demands placed on their bodies.
Brook Pilates (formerly Isis Pilates) was established in 2008 by its clinical director Sarah Chambers, who recognized the demand for physiotherapy led Pilates in the local area. Initially organizing Pilates sessions in local village halls, she was then presented with the opportunity to open her own Studio at the back of her home in a converted barn. The Studio offers a tranquil setting, overlooking mature gardens, in the Oxfordshire countryside for people to learn about their posture, movement and exercises to improve the overall well-being.
With her back ground as a physiotherapist, Sarah is able to understand each individual clients body to ensure a bespoke, safe and clinically effective program is developed for the client. Pilates can be taught on a 1:1 basis or in classes using equipment or matwork.
As well as being the Clinical Director of Brook Pilates, Sarah is also an International Master Trainer with the APPI (Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute), training physios both internationally and in the UK to become Pilates instructors. Brook Pilates has also become an APPI Practice Centre, providing place for APPI members and students to learn and practice their Clinical Pilates.
We have worked with a wide range of clients with many different requirements including those waiting spinal surgery (perhaps trying to avoid it); pre and postnatal ladies; those with bone health problems (osteoporosis), post joint replacements; those with Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinsons. At a higher level we have worked with cyclists, runners, triathletes, and those in the armed forces where Pilates has been used to optimize performance, prevent injury and rehabilitate following injury.
